Before it was a place to look at the water, it was a place to work on it.
Monterey was a whaling town. Portuguese and Azorean crews ran shore stations here from the 1850s. The Old Whaling Station still stands on Decatur Street, and the sidewalk outside it was laid in whalebone.
The name is about that labor rather than that hunt. It points to the immigrant working coast the postcards leave out, and to the street one of us grew up on.
